Clean Government Urged in Western Development

A senior Chinese leader has called for clean governments to ensure the country's drive to develop its vast and underdeveloped western regions a success.

Wei Jianxing, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee, made the call during his July 14 to 17 inspection tour of northwest China's Qinghai province.

Developing the west represents a major strategy of the central authorities at a time when the national economy is entering a new phase of development. It will have a far-reaching significance to China's prosperity and long-term stability.

It is imperative to further strengthen the building-up of clean governments and anti-corruption fights in the process so that the western development will be carried out in a healthy and orderly way, said Wei, also secretary of the CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection.

The Chinese leader also noted that major decision-makings in the western development should be based on opinions from as wide a range as possible.

The building of large-scale projects and government purchases should be conducted through market mechanism, such as public bidding, Wei stressed.
