China's First Social Insurance Info Network Open

China's first provincial-level social insurance information network became operational Wednesday in south China's Guangdong Province.

Guangdong's old-age pension fund amounts to over 14 billion yuan (about US$ 1.68 billion), accounting for 20 percent of the country's total. The information system can help improve the efficiency of pension payments.

The network has pooled social insurance information from many government branches including social security, civil administration, public health, finance and public security.

You Ningfeng, vice-governor of Guangdong, urged the various departments to make sure they update their data promptly.

The provincial government plans to computerize the social security system by the year 2005. The province's coverage rate of unemployment insurance is expected to reach 95 percent by the end of this year.
