China Unicom Starts to Provide Internet Service

China Unicom, the country's second largest provider of telecommunications services, Wednesday opened its Internet service by opening the port website www. cnuninet.com.

The China Unicom Network will have international digital ports in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou.

China Unicom, the country's No. 2 telecommunications operator, was listed on the New York and Hong Kong stock exchanges last month.

China Unicom was set up in 1993, and grew rapidly with strong support from the government. The company now boasts 14 percent of the Chinese domestic market, and its mobile Telecom network subscribers had reached 10.1 million as of June this year.

China Unicom is now involved in a wide range of businesses, from mobile telecommunications, paging and fixed telephones, to data and Internet services.
