Official Calls for Social Stability in Xinjiang

Chinese State Councilor Ismail Ahmat said that social stability in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region must be consolidated by accelerating economic development.

Speaking in this capital of the region, he urged local officials to adhere to President Jiang Zemin's instructions, and take into consideration the people's fundamental interests.

When attending a tourism fair here, he said that Xinjiang has opened a new chapter for tourism development, which will benefit local economy.

He pointed out that Xinjiang is located on the ancient Silk Road, where there are numerous historical sites and relics that can be used to attract visitors.

In addition, Xinjiang's landscape is among the most beautiful in the country, he said.

The development of tourism can enhance the exchanges between different ethnic groups, and thus consolidate their friendly relations, he stressed.
