HK Govt Invites Applications for LPG Taxis Grant

The Transport Department of Hong Kong announced Thursday that eligible diesel taxi owners are invited to apply from August 8 this year for a one-off grant to convert their diesel taxis into Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) taxis.

The replacement of diesel taxis by LPG taxis was one of the measures the government introduced to improve the air quality in Hong Kong and the grant would help encourage an early switch to LPG taxis by owners of diesel taxis, according to a spokesman with the Transport Department.

The first registered owner of an LPG taxi that was first registered on or after October 7, 1999 for the replacement is eligible to apply for the full grant of 40,000 HK dollars (5,128 U. S. dollars).

The first registered owner of an LPG taxi that was first registered on or before October 6, 1999 for the replacement of his diesel taxi is eligible to apply for 50 percent of the grant. The current registered owner of the LPG taxi is also eligible to apply for 50 percent of the grant.
