25 Beijing Streets Marked Out for Cultural Protection

The old urban areas, which are a concentrated expression of the essence of Beijing's history and culture, are expected to be properly protected. The planning work for the protection of 25 streets, which account for 37 percent of the area of Beijing's old city districts, was launched recently and is expected to be completed at the end of this year. This signifies Beijing's intensified effort for the protection of historical and cultural areas.

These streets include: Nanchangjie, Beichangjie, Xihuamen Street, Nanchizi, Beichizi, Donghuamen Street, Wenjin Street, Jingshan Qianjie, Jingshan Dongjie, Jingshan Xijie, Sheshanmen Street, Jingshan Houjie, Di'anmennei Street, Wusi Street, Shishahai area, Nanluogu Alley, Guozijian area, Fuchengmennei Street, No1-8 streets in North Xisi, No3-8 streets in North Dongsi, Dongjiao Minxiang, Dazhalan area, East Liulichang, West Liulichang and Xianyukou area.

These 25 old streets, of which 14 are located within the central area near the Forbidden City, take up a total area of 957 hectares. In addition, relevant regulations are in the making.
