Consumer Prices of HK Decreases in June

Consumer prices of Hong Kong in overall terms registered a year-on-year rate of decrease of 4.5 percent in June 2000, same as that in May 2000, according to the Census and Statistics Department of Hong Kong Friday.

Releasing the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the department indicated that the prices of clothing and footwear showed larger year-on-year decreases of 10.8 percent in the Composite CPI.

Whereas the prices of basic foodstuffs and of alcoholic drinks and tobacco had smaller declines of 1.2 percent each.

The charges on fuel and light showed a moderated increase of 3. 3 percent, while the prices of miscellaneous goods also rose 0.2 percent in June.

A government secretariat spokesman noted that consumer prices stayed on a decline, as significant price discounts continued to be offered for a wide range of consumer items amidst keen competition in the local retail market, adding that lower consumer prices helped the real purchasing power of households.
