Shanghai Bans Gambling and Erotic Entertainment

China's leading industrial and commercial city Shanghai Friday launched a ban on drug abuse, gambling and prostitution in entertainment arcades.

The city's law-enforcement body will focus on these illegal activities in video arcades, karaoke bars, sauna and massage parlors, as well as beauty salons, tea houses, bars and hotels, according to a notice released by the municipal police and the other two governmental organs overseeing the cultural market in Friday's Wenhui Daily.

The city relevant authorities will not authorize new entertainment businesses, the notice said.

Electronic game arcades and web bars cannot be located less than 200 meters from primary or middle schools, and cannot admit adolescents except during holiday periods, the Shanghai-based newspaper said.

China has held a three-month comprehensive check on entertainment business throughout the country, which was jointly organized by the ministries of Culture and Public Security.
