China Bans Imports of Snow Brand Dairy Products

The State Administration for Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine has issued a notice banning imports of Japanese-made Snow Brand dairy products, which are said to be bacteria-tainted.

The notice says that all the imported Snow Brand products will be confiscated and destroyed, and urges that customs inspections be tightened in this regard.

Since June this year, more than 14,000 people have fallen ill from consuming bacteria-tainted milk in the Osaka area of western Japan. Investigations show that the Snow Brand Milk Products Co. Ltd. is responsible for this incident.

Experts say that the milk contains certain bacteria that can produce toxins that can trigger vomiting and diarrhea.

A small quantity of Snow Brand dairy products has been imported into China, sources say.

The ban is based on the Foodstuffs Sanitation Law of the People 's Republic of China.
