China Investigates Illegal Health Food

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has found that nearly 80 kinds of health food products exaggerate their curative effects in its latest investigation.

As a result, the MOH has prohibited the production of these foodstuffs.

Disclosing the names of these health foods today, Zhao Tonggang, director of the MOH law and supervision department, said that the actions of these food producers have severely violated the Food Hygiene Law of the People's Republic of China and the Health Food Management Regulations of the People's Republic of China, cheated and misled consumers, and disturbed the health food market.

The Health Food Management Regulations of the People's Republic of China state that health food should not hint that it can cure diseases.

However, Zhao noted that some enterprises simply pursue profits, with no regard to laws or regulations.

Zhao also pointed out that some products claim that they "can improve sexual function", but until now, "the MOH has not approved any such health food".

The MOH also revealed its investigation findings of disposable medical and sanitation products, finding that 93.7 percent are qualified. Among the 5,211 cosmetics checked, 81 percent of the imported cosmetics were up to the standard, and 68 percent of the China-made ones were qualified.
