Shaanxi Earmarks 2.2 Billion Yuan for Telecom Upgrading

Shaanxi Province in northwest China is to inject another 2.2 billion yuan this year into upgrading its telecommunications network, a leading telecom operator said In Xi'an on Saturday.

Zhou Shifu, president of Shaanxi Telecom, said at the inauguration ceremony of this branch of China Telecom in Xi'an on Saturdday that his company will focus its development efforts on increasing fixed-line usage and building an information expressway based on its fiber-optical and broadband telecommunications networks.

Fixed-line phone users in Shaanxi so far exceed three million, which means that one in ten persons in the province owns a fixed- line phone, according to Zhou.

The telecommunications industry has been considered the fastest- growing economic sector in Shaanxi for the past 20 years. Fiber- optical telecommunication has become a reality in all counties and most of the townships in the province. Meanwhile, the number of phone users increased by 400,000 in 1999, and by 580,000 in the first six months of this year.
