Sea Water Desalination Research Center Established

A sea water desalination research center has been set up in Tianjin University in north China.

The research center is dedicated to promoting China's technological progress on sea water desalination.

Tianjin University, one of China's first group of institutes to carry out such a program, developed China's first sea water desalination equipment early in the 1970s. It also helped to build China's largest industrial desalination equipment for power plants.

Water shortage has become a world-wide problem and more than 100 cities in China are now suffering from a shortage of water.

Sea water desalination is one of the world's most influential burgeoning industrial sectors and China has been working in this field for more than twenty years. The Chinese government along with some coastal cities are now making greater efforts to desalinate sea water which is an effective way of utilizing marine resources and of great significance for alleviating China's serious shortage of freshwater resources.
