Two Female Students to Cross Lop Nor Desert

Two Chinese female students set off today from Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, to trek across the Lop Nor wilderness, China's largest dried salt lake.

If the two girls, Qinghua University's Bao Limin and Northeast China University's Xu Shan, succeed, they will be the first group female students passing through Lop Nor during the hot August.

The adventurers will go westward along the Hexi Corridor, Zhangye, Jiuquan, Dunhuang and Loulan, part of the ancient Silk Road, covering some 2,600 km. They will brave ground temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius to cross Lop Nor.

Bao said, "Going to western China is my long-cherished dream."

The trip was organized by the Qinghua University, Beijing.
