NPC Chairman Meets Cape Verde Parliament Leader

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC), met with President Antonio Do Espirito Santo Fonseca of Cape Verde's National People's Assembly (NPA) in Beidaihe Wednesday.

Li said the Chinese Government has always attached great importance to relations with Cape Verde. China highly appreciates the pursuit of the One-China Policy by the Cape Verde government, he said.

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties, relations between China and Cape Verde have been advancing steadily, Li said, adding China is willing to further develop cooperation in all fields on the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Inter-parliamentary contacts constitute an important part of the overall bilateral ties, and the Chinese NPC is willing to increase communication with the Cape Verde's NPA, Li said, voicing the conviction that Fonseca's current visit would help promote the development of bilateral relations.

Fonseca said although Cape Verde and China are far apart geographically, the two countries and their peoples have maintained profound friendship. He expressed gratitude and appreciation for China's long-term assistance to Cape Verde and other African countries.

The Government of Cape Verde highly emphasizes its relations with China, and is willing to develop bilateral cooperation in all fields, he said, stressing Cape Verde firmly supports China's reunification cause.

Fonseca and his party arrived in Beijing Tuesday for a 5-day official goodwill visit as Li's guest.
