Lawmaker Calls for Democratic, Scientific Legislation

A Chinese legislator has urged to make legislation democratic and scientific by implementing the Law on Legislation which went into effect July 1 this year.

These remarks were made by Xu Jialu, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, at a local panel discussion on the implementation of the new law.

Xu said the new law lays a legal foundation for regulating legislative activities and tackling various kinds of legislative problems.

Laws have to embody and reflect the will of the people and be comply to the fundamental interests of the majority, said Xu, who is also chairman of the Central Committee of the China Association for Promoting Democracy.

At the discussion, many other lawmakers, scholars and experts agreed that the new law is of great importance and will play a large role in protecting the legal rights and interests of civilians and the legal profession.

The meeting was sponsored by the editing board of the China's People's Congress magazine and the domestic political department of the "People's Daily".
