Yunnan to Supply Electricity to Guangdong

Southwest China's Yunnan province Thursday signed an agreement with Guangdong province in south China on supplying electricity to Guangdong in the next 10 years.

Yunnan will supply 900,000 kwh of electricity to Guangdong in 2001. The amount will grow to 1.2 million kwh in 2002 and to 1.5 million kwh per year from 2003 to 2010.

Yunnan will further increase electricity supplies to Guangdong after 2010.

Yunnan is one of the richest provinces in China in terms of energy resources, especially hydropower.

Guangdong province is one of the most prosperous provinces in China. But it lacks energy. Rapid economic growth is expected to boost the demand for electricity in the province by 7.7 percent every year.

The province will need nearly 15 million kilowatts of additional electricity generating capacity in the next five years.
