Colombian Rebel Organ Criticizes Clinton's Future Visit

The rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) said Saturday that the impending visit of US President Bill Clinton is the beginning of a direct Washington intervention in the country.

"This visit (of Clinton to Colombia) is not the visit of a friend of the Colombian people, but all the opposite," said FARC leader Carlos Antonio Lozada in statements broadcast by the RCN radio network.

"It is the visit of a president that has been intervening in a gross manner in the internal affairs of our country through the Plan Colombia," he said.

"The visit of President Clinton confirms for us that a direct and open intervention of the United States in our country is approaching," said Lozada.

Clinton announced Friday that he will visit Colombia on August 30, where he will underscore the support of the United States to the search for peace, the combat to drug trafficking, the construction of the economy, and the intensification of democracy in the country.

Colombian President Andres Pastrana called Clinton's visit "a very big effort" of the US president "and an unprecedented action because of the moment we are living in the two countries'

diplomatic relations."
