China to Upgrade Lhasa's Telecom
China will upgrade the telecommunications network in this capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Under a contract signed between the region's telecommunications company and Shanghai Bell here today, the number of phone lines in Lhasa will be increased by 70,000. At present, the city has some 160,000 lines.
Shanghai Bell, a Sino-Belgian joint venture, will carry out the project, which involves an investment of 120 million yuan (about 14.5 million US dollars).
Systems for long-distance calls, mobile phones and Internet Phone (IP) will also be improved in Lhasa, according to Yuan Xin, vice-president of Shanghai Bell.
It will be the largest telecommunications project in terms of investment in Tibet.
Doje, vice-chairman of the People's Government of the Tibet Autonomous Region, said that the project, due to be completed at the end of next year, will greatly promote local economic development.
