Arafat in UAE to Garner Support for Palestinians
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Sunday night from Libya as part of a campaign to rally support in the wake of the failed Camp David peace talks with Israel last month, the official WAM news agency reported Monday.
Arafat said upon arrival that he had briefed UAE President Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al-Nahyan on the latest developments of the Camp David peace summit, adding that Sheikh Zayed is following the negotiations step by step.
Arafat praised UAE's principled positions on fully supporting the Palestinian stance on Jerusalem, refugees and other issues discussed at the Camp David summit, which ended on July 25 without an agreement.
He also mentioned a statement made by UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hamdan Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan on Saturday, which denounced an announcement by U.S. President Bill Clinton to move the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
The statement described the move as a violation of the international law and resolutions, and warned that it will strip the US of its role as an impartial mediator.
Arafat commended the position as "firm and clear," the WAM added.
