Information System for Rare Plants in Three Gorges to Be Established
Chinese botanists have made a comparatively thorough investigation of the special, rare and solely surviving plants in the Three-Gorge Dam submerged area in Chongqing Municipality. This has rendered an effective protection to the majorities of endangered rare plants, and by doing so a whole set of scientific information system corresponding to that of the world will be set up for these plants on the brink of extinction.
There are more than 100 species of special, rare, solely surviving plants in the embrace of the Three-Gorge Dam submerged area in Chongqing, Chengkou, Baima and Jinfoshan Nature Reserve, which has formed a rare gene base of plants in the world. The protection work for these endangered plants has been carried out simultaneously with the construction of the Three-Gorge Project. Except for the work of on-the-spot or removal protection, the botanists have also made investigations and inspections on some key plants in the wilderness, collected specimens, and carried on experiments of removal planting for these rare plants with regard to their biological features, state in the wilderness, special shapes and geographical distribution as well as economic values. So far, they have gathered up a great number of data materials, including pictures and writings, and the initial work has been brought to an end. In the meanwhile computer programming, CD recording, homepage making and other work have been put on the agenda, and the system is expected to go into operation by the end of this year.
