Countdown Starts for Operation of Chengdu-Kunming Electrified Railway

The countdown has begun for the official operation of an electrified railway linking Chengdu and Kunming, capitals of southwest China's Sichuan and Yunnan provinces, respectively.

The electrified railway, scheduled to open to traffic on September 30, is expected to double the railway's transportation capacity to cater to increasing traffic and plays an important role in the economic development of western China.

The 1,100-km railway line started construction in 1960 and opened to traffic ten years later. Its electrification began on March 18, 1993 and cost four billion yuan.
