Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party Marks 70th Anniversary


CPWDP Marks 70th Anniversary
The Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party (CPWDP) held a grand ceremony in Beijing Friday to mark its 70th anniversary.

The CPWDP is one of the eight non-Communist parties which participate in China's government.

Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), made an inscription for the occasion, which read, "Unite and struggle for the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation."

At the meeting, Li Ruihuan, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, spoke highly of the glorious history of the CPWDP, saying that the CPWDP has played an important role and enjoys important status in China's political life.

Li, also chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), said that both the Communist Party, as the ruling party, and the non-Communist parties participating in government should strive to better perform their mission entrusted by the era and the people.

He called on the CPDWP to continue to take economic development as the central task and actively promote socialist democracy, following the principle of long-term coexistence and mutual supervision.

He urged the non-Communist parties, including the CPWDP, to explore new ways for self-improvement.

Jiang Zhenghua, vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC) and chairman of the Central Committee of the CPWDP, called on organizations of the CPWDP at all levels to uphold their patriotic and other fine traditions so as to contribute to the reforms, development and stability, and to the total reunification of the country.

Xu Jialu, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee and the China Association for the Promotion of Democracy, extended congratulations on the CPWDP's 70th anniversary on behalf of China 's other non-Communist parties and the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.

Among those who were present at the meeting to convey congratulations were Buhe, vice-chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, and Wang Zhaoguo and Luo Haocai, vice-chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee.
