Guiyang to Built Model City of Environment Protection

Guiyang, the capital of Guizhou province, will build a model environment protection city with "green mountains, clear water and blue sky" within ten years.

According to the plan, by the year 2010, the level of urbanization of Guiyang will be increased to 58%, the actual residential population will be 1.74 million and the area of construction land will be 157 square kilometers. Experts point out that the new master plan has a great deal of significance in terms of turning Guiyang into a major city in the Southwest, an important transportation hub, industrial base and center of trade and tourism.

The new master plan, while developing the regional economy, will insist on sustaining the city's ecological environment and improving the overall quality of the environment. As the city undergoes a facelift, the plan emphasizes Guiyang's natural landscapes, its "mountains, water, caves and forests." In accordance with the local topography, the urban area will be divided into one central area and eight surrounding areas. The plan also requires that no less than 30 percent of the newly constructed city must be covered by greens. By 2010, 40% of Guiyang will be covered with greens and the average green area per person will be 10 square meters.
