China Calls for Protection, Respect for Developing Nations' Interests

China called for protection and respect for the interests of developing countries Wednesday, and hoped a consensus could be reached at the ongoing millennium summit of national parliamentary leaders.

China's top legislator Li Peng made the call during his meeting with Guy Nzouba Ndama, the president of Gabon's National Assembly, after he delivered a speech at the opening session of the three-day Conference of the Presiding Officers of National Parliaments.

Ndama spoke highly of Li's speech, in which Li spelled out the principles China espouses while developing state-to-state relations and enhancing international cooperation.

Li's speech reflected the interests and demands of developing countries, Ndama said.

Li Peng said that with the advent of the new century, all countries in the world should try to seek common development, and during this process, the rights and interests of developing nations deserve protection and respect.

"We hope that a consensus on this can be reached at the ongoing conference of the national parliamentary leaders," he said.

The two leaders also agreed that greater efforts should be made to further develop cooperation between the two countries.
