China to Produce Universal Blood

China will begin to manufacture universal blood with the help of a new technology that turns blood of different types into a universal one via transgenic engineering, according to sources.

The technology has been developed by the Institution of Transfusion under the Chinese Academy of Military Medicine, the sources said.

The Huayu Group and the Tianjin New Technology Industrial Park will jointly set up the Huayu Bio-Garden Development Co. Ltd., to manufacture the blood, with an investment of 240 million yuan (about 29.3 million U.S. dollars).

The new company will be located in the Torch Venture Garden of the industrial park in north China's port city of Tianjin.

According to some experts involved in the research, so far, they have succeeded in transforming the "B" type of blood to the "O" type.

They said that the transformations from the "A" group to the "O" group and from porcine blood to human's are being studied and are expected to be put into future industrial production.
