Liberian President Suspends Defense Minister

Liberian President Charles Taylor suspended his defense minister on Monday, accusing him of insubordination.

Reports reaching here quoted a presidential statement as saying that deputy defense minister, Sylvanus Williams, would act as caretaker minister.

The suspension of Daniel Chea came as fighting flared between Liberian government forces and rebels in the north since July.

Taylor accused neighboring Guinea of allowing the rebels to use its territory as a springboard for launching attacks, but Guinea denied the charges.

Guinea said at the weekend that unidentified gunmen from Liberia killed 47 people and wounded 29 in a raid on a Guinea village near their common border.
