Clinton Says Jiang Charmed US Interviewer on CBS

US President Bill Clinton, acknowledged master of the sound bite and media appearance, on Wednesday doffed his cap to Chinese President Jiang Zemin for his performance on America's most-watched television network news programme.

Clinton was chatting to Jiang before lunch at the United Nations, where heads of state and government have gathered for the Millennium Summit.

Jiang, in a charm offensive aimed at ordinary Americans, appeared on US television this week in a rare interview with veteran anchorman Mike Wallace of CBS's "60 minutes" programme.

"I see you've taken American television by storm ... (anchorman) Mike Wallace is so mean to all the rest of us. He's purring like a little child (with you). I saw it, it was great.

It was great. I'm so jealous," Clinton said. Jiang beamed.
