Urumqi Explosion an Accident: Experts
The Ministry of Public Security announced Wednesday that the catastrophic explosion that occurred on September 8 in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, was an accident.
A group of experts from the ministry reached the conclusion after a series of intensive examinations of the scene and evidences and thorough investigations into the situation.
At 7:30 p.m. that evening, a vehicle was traveling on Xishan Road in the western suburbs of Urumqi, carrying explosives set to be destroyed, which were originally used for training local militiamen.
The bumpy road conditions rocked the vehicle, and the explosives were accidentally detonated, the experts said.
More than 20 motor vehicles and some nearby houses were damaged in the accident.
