Road Accident Kills 12 in NW China

At least 12 passengers, seven men and five women, were killed and 17 others injured in a highway accident in northwestern Gangsu Province Wednesday.

The accident occurred at about 11:30, when a bus carrying 29 passengers traveled on the No.212 National Highway in mountainous Zhangxian County and turned turtle in a roadside ditch.

Ten people died on the spot and two others breathed their last on the way to hospital. Eight passengers suffered serious injuries, while the wounds of nine others including the driver, Wang Yanjun, are minor.

Shortly after the occurrence of the mishap, over 30 police officers rushed to the rescue. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, the police said.

Witnesses said it was slightly raining at the time of the accident.
