Undersea Optical Fiber Cable in Operation

A 38,000-kilometer optical fiber cable system linking 33 countries in Asia and Europe went into operation Friday.

The subaqueous cable line, which heads west from Britain to the Republic of Korea on the other side, has a high transmission speed of 20Gb per second.

The line had cost 1.5 billion U.S. dollars and took three years to build. China Telecom invested 39 million U.S. dollars, or 2.6 percent of the total.

The cable system has two landing stations in China, namely in Shanghai and Shantou, in south China's Guangdong province.
