Beijing to Impose Traffic Control for Week-long National Day Vacation

Beijing will impose traffic control in some areas during the week-long National Day vacation starting on October 1.

It is estimated that nearly 100 million tourists will visit Beijing by various roads during the "golden week".

Ma Zhenchuan, chief of Beijing Traffic Control Bureau, said the temporary traffic control is aimed to guarantee safe and unblocked transportation in Beijing, and to create a sound transportation climate for the holiday economy.

Drivers will be required to show a special pass issued by the bureau to go to some popular destinations, such as the Summer Palace and the Great Wall (Badaling Section).

Temporary parking lots have been prepared in these places.

Beijing learnt a lesson from the extreme traffic jam in May when hundreds of thousands of people crowded into places like the Badaling Great Wall during the week-long vacation, which started on May 1.

It took some people more than 12 hours, at least 10 hours on ordinary days, to arrive at the foot of the Great Wall on May 1 due to heavily blocked traffic.

Ma Zhenchuan has asked local people and tourists to avoid making travel plans on the peak days of October 1 to 3, and listen to the radio for traffic information.
