Annan Pledges to Aid Asian Countries in Fight With Flood

The United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan says the U.N. is ready to help Asian countries fight the consequences of floods which are washing across the region.

Hundreds of people are dead, and thousands have lost their homes through the most serious flooding in decades, across India, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Vietnam.

Annan says he is distressed by the devastation, especially the high level of deaths and displacement.

The U.N. head is calling on the international community to contribute generously to help governments assist the victims of the floods.
