"Bogus" Doctor Gets 15-Year imprisonment

Hu Wanlin, a "bogus" physician who is responsible for the deaths of at least three people was sentenced to 15 years in prison today. He no longer has the right to vote for five years and has been fined 150,000 yuan.

The verdict was passed by Shangqiu City Intermediate People's Court in Central China's Henan Province, which called Hu's crime as "practicing medicine illegally".

Hu, a native of Mianyang City of Southwest China's Sichuan Province, was arrested in 1999 by the Shangqiu Public Security Bureau in Henan Province on suspicion of practising medicine illegally after several patients under his treatment died.

Without registered qualifications, Hu opened medical services in several hopitals in Xinjiang Ugyr Autonomous Region, Shanxi and Henan Provinces.

Three people who died as a result of Hu's treatment are Wang Baoran, an engineer from Zhengzhou, capital city of Henan Province who died on December 16 of 1997, Liu Famin, mayor of Luohe City of Henan Province who died on September 27 of 1998 and He Suyun, a teacher from Shangqiu who died October 1 1998.
