Chinese Olympic Delegation Holds Report Meeting

Applause and flowers seemed to take people back to the 27th Olympic Games in Sydney Sunday afternoon at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.

Approximately 3,000 spectators expressed their appreciation towards the Chinese athletes by applauding at the Chinese Olympic delegation's reporting meeting.

"Achievements and glory should belong to our motherland and its people," Yuan Weimin, chief of the State General Administration of Sport and head of the Chinese Olympic delegation, said at the meeting.

Chinese athletes made a historical breakthrough at the Games by finishing third on both the gold medal and medal table.

Three Chinese athletes created eight world records and six created 11 Olympic records, Yuan said.

Yuan attributed the excellent performance to the support of the whole nation and the painstaking efforts of the athletes and sports workers of the country.

China's comprehensive sports ability is still at the forefront of the world, Yuan said, adding that China is going to make its first ten-year plan to win Olympic glory. The country is bidding to host the 2008 Olympics to push forward the development physical culture in the country, Yuan said.

The meeting was jointly held by the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, the State General Administration of Sport, the General Political Department of the People's Liberation Army.
