About 110 postdoctoral researchers from various parts of China gathered Tuesday in Tianjin University to have an academic symposium on the studies of machinery and instruments.

The symposium is part of the 2000 Academic Conference of Chinese Postdoctorate Researchers. At today's opening ceremony, three academicians from the Chinese Academy of Sciences gave keynote speeches.

The office of the Tianjin Talent Development Fund issued today a total of 1.46 million yuan (176,000 US dollars) of allowance and research funds to people doing their postdoctoral work in Tianjin.

China has established 798 postdoctoral stations and recruited a total of 12,000 with doctorate degrees since the system was set up in 1985.
