Chinese, Canadian Premiers Exchange Greetings on Anniversary of Relations

Premier Zhu Rongji and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien have exchanged greetings to each other on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between their two countries.

The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada is a very important milestone in the history of bilateral ties, Zhu said in a congratulatory message to Chretien on Thursday.

With the efforts of the two governments and peoples, relations of friendly cooperation between the two countries has developed on a full scale while mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples have been increasingly strengthened, Zhu said.

The development of long-term, stable cooperative relations between China and Canada will not only conform to the fundamental interests and common aspirations of the two countries and two peoples, but also will be conducive to world peace, stability and development, Zhu added.

In his message sent to Zhu, Chretien said that the growth in commercial, cultural, academic, and people-to-people relations between Canada and China since October 13, 1970 -- the day of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries --has been remarkable.

The Canadian prime minister also expressed his confidence that "Canada and China will continue to build on the strong basis of our thirty years of friendship and cooperation and provide the foundation for an even stronger partnership between the Canadian and Chinese peoples."
