Chinese and Vietnamese Military Leaders Hold Talks

The Chinese military is willing to maintain close contacts with the Vietnamese armed forces, said Fu Quanyou, chief of general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army.

Fu, who is also a member of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks Monday in talks with Le Van Dung, chief of general staff of the Vietnamese armed forces.

Fu said that China and Vietnam, two neighboring countries, enjoy a traditional friendship.

He noted that enhancing the good-neighborly and friendly relations between the two countries is of vital significance to maintaining the peace and stability in the region and the world.

Sino-Vietnamese ties are developing smoothly, he told the Vietnamese guest.

In February last year, Jiang Zemin, general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, and his Vietnamese counterpart Le Kha Phieu, set forth the framework for bilateral relations, namely building long-term, stable, future-oriented good-neighborly and all-round cooperative relations between the two countries, Fu noted.

That marked a new historical stage in the relations between the two Parties and the two countries, Fu stressed.

Fu said that the relations between the two militaries have been furthered in recent years, adding that the Chinese military is willing to work with the Vietnamese military to continue to keep the stability and peace in the border areas between the two countries, in order to make positive contributions to the overall development of bilateral ties.

Fu also briefed the guests on China's domestic situation, military building, and the Chinese government's principled position on the Taiwan issue.

Fu thanked the Vietnamese government for its long-term adherence to the "one-China" policy.

Le said that the peoples of the two countries have been supporting and helping each other for a long time. He noted that developing the mutually-benefitial cooperation and friendship between the two countries will have a positive impact on the maintenance of peace and stability in the region.

He said that the friendly cooperation between the two militaries has been furthered in recent years, adding that he hopes the two sides will continue to enhance the relationship.
