23 Sailors Remained Alive After Explosions on Submarine Kursk

A note found in the pocket of Captain Dmitry Kolesnikov, whose body was lifted from the Kursk nuclear submarine, shows that 23 crewmembers remained alive on the sub after the disaster occurred on August 12.

Igor Dygalo, head of the Russian Navy's press service announced Thursday, the note says the surviving crewmembers in the sixth, seventh and eighth compartments moved to the ninth compartment, but could not go to the surface.

Admiral Vladimir Kuroyedov spoke of the note while meeting with the Kursk widows in Vidyayevo on Thursday, Dygalo said.

In connection with this information, the work in the seventh and eighth compartments has been stopped and the divers will now be trying to enter the ninth compartment of the submarine, the admiral said.

The Kursk submarine sank in the Barents Sea during a drill, killing all 118 crew on board.
