China to Strengthen IT Education

China plans to strengthen information technology (IT) education at primary and high schools, said an official from the Ministry of Education (MOE).

Representatives from 31 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions attended the National Conference on Primary and High Schools' IT Education on Wednesday.

Beijing, the national capital, put forward the idea of "Digital Beijing", which aims to set up a three-level network, including a main network, a district network and a campus one.

At present, the main network has been completed, and the district network, which is under construction, will be connected with the main network by the end of 2001.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Municipality has turned primary and high schools' computer courses into IT courses, and has organized two exhibitions of more than 16,000 electronic works by teachers and students.

In addition, various areas of China have also made great progress in the reform of IT education.

Guizhou Province in southwest China carried out a project on IT education, which funded some primary and high schools to buy computer and network equipment.

In the past few years, China has made great efforts to improve IT education, including the reform in the teaching materials, teachers' education, teaching equipment, computer-aided instruction and management.
