Electrification of Major Railway Completed

Electrification of a 270-km-long railway, which connects Shenmu County in northwest China's Shaanxi Province and Shuozhou City in north China's Shanxi Province, was completed Thursday.

Meanwhile, one-way transportation of the double-line railway was put into service.

The railway is the western part of the country's second trunk line for coal transportation from the west to the east, linking Shenmu with Huanghua City on the Bohai Bay in Hebei Province.

Electrification of the 855-km-long Shenmu-Huanghua railway requires a total investment of 30 billion yuan (3.6 billion U.S. dollars). The railway, which is scheduled to be operational in 2002, will handle 60 to 100 million tons of coal.
