Ancient Tower Cited for Environmental Improvement

Yellow Crane Tower, one of the three most famous towers in south China, has been presented with a certificate of authentication for surviving ISO14001 standards, the highest criteria for environmental control in the world.

It is the first scenic site that has ever won such an honor in China.

Built in the year 223 during Three Kingdoms (220-280) period, Yellow Crane Tower, situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Wuhan City, also capital of Central China's Hubei Province. Equally famous are Tengwang Tower in Nanchang City of Jiangxi Province and Yueyang Tower in Yueyang City of Hunan Province.

Yellow Crane Tower was rebuilt in 1985 and has been expanded into a park consisting of 60 scenic sites where the culture of ancient Chu state and modern civilization is well blended.

An environmental control official with Yellow Crane Tower Park said that they have kept a set of fine traditional methods to protect environment around the Yellow Crane Tower. This year, it has spent more than one million yuan in upgrading works for treatment of discarded paper, trash left behind by tourists, sewage, noise control, as well as for discharge of oil and smoke.

In addition to Yellow Crane Tower Park, 150 other Chinese enterprises have also won certificates of authentication for passing ISO14001 environmental control standards, said an official for environmental control from the State Environmental Protection Administration.
