At Least 66 Killed Singapore Airline Plane Crash

The Singapore Airline (SIA) confirmed Wednesday morning that at least 66 people have been killed in the Tuesday night crash of a Singapore Airline plane during take off at Taipei's Chiang Kai Shek Airport.

Rescue operations are in progress, the airline said.

Of the 159 passengers on board of the SQ 006 flight, 11 are from Singapore; 55 from Taiwan, China; 47 from the United States; 11 from India; five from Indonesia; four from Mexico; four from the United Kingdom; two from Thailand; two from New Zealand; two from Vietnam; and one each from Australia, Canada,Cambodia, Germany, Japan, the Philippines, Ireland and the Canary Islands, SIA said.

The B747-400 en route from Taipei to Los Angels with the 159 passengers and 20 crew on board crashed on the runway during takeoff at 11:18 p.m. local times (1918 GMT).

The pilot, C. K. Foong, is a Malaysian with 11,235 flying hours' experience.
