SIA Announces Compensations for Deceased in Plane Crash

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) announced Saturday that it is offering the families of passengers and crew who died in the Flight SQ 006 accident in Taipei 400,000 US dollars each in compensation.

SIA also said in a press release that the airline will also meet the medical expenses of injured passengers and crew and will discuss compensation with each of them.

"This is a very sad situation and the airline hopes to help families through this terrible period by offering compensation without delay," SIA said.

On Thursday, SIA announced it would provide 25,000 US dollars as immediate relief to the next-of-kin of each deceased passenger.

According to the press release, families are being informed of the offer by SIA "buddies" who have accompanied them since the first hours of the tragedy and other SIA staff.

Meanwhile, the families will receive a letter containing details of the offer within the next two weeks, SIA said.

SIA "buddies" are the airline's staff members who have volunteered to extend SIA's care to the families of passengers and crews in times of crisis and have received training on how they should go about helping family members. Following the crash of Flight SQ 006, SIA sent more than 100 SIA "buddies" to Taipei to care for each passenger's family and they are matched with the next-of-kin of the passengers according to their spoken language, religion, culture and gender.
