New Anti-Fake Goods Drive Launched in China

The State Council issued a circular recently ordering the launching of a new crackdown on the manufacturing and selling of counterfeit and substandard goods throughout the country.

According to the circular, the massive campaign, which lasts through January 24, 2001, is aimed at protecting the interests of consumers and enterprises.

The circular urges localities to unify their thinking and have a better understanding of the issue as the fake and poor quality products are marring the reputation of the country's products.

The document lists a number of fields that need better protective efforts, including farm chemicals, composite fertilizers, seeds, steel, automobile parts, cigarettes, medicine, disposable injectors, and cosmetics.

Efforts should be focused on major cases, and those who have committed crimes involving large amounts of money must be given severe punishments according to law, the document said.

It urges the combining of this campaign with the current anti-corruption drive by punishing the officials who are collaborating with the producers and sellers of fake goods.

The circular also calls for improving relevant laws and regulations and strengthening law enforcement.

A national coordination office for the campaign will be set up consisting of officials government departments, judicial departments, the armed police, and the Publicity Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

The circular highlighted the supervisory role of the media. Rules on rewarding those who give tips or participate in the campaign will be stipulated in accordance with relevant laws and regulations.
