Chinese President Meets Cambodian Parliament Leaders

President Jiang Zemin met with Cambodian Senate President Chea Sim and National Assembly President Norodom Ranarith respectively on November 13 in Phnom Penh.

Chea Sim commended Jiang's visit, saying that the visit will not only promote the growth of Cambodian-Chinese ties but also open a new chapter of bilateral friendship.

He also extended gratitude for China's assistance to Cambodia.

He told Jiang that the Cambodian Senate is willing to further enhance the exchanges with China and make its active contribution to the development of the bilateral ties.

Chea Sim reiterated that Cambodia continues to adopt the One-China policy. "There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is a province of China," he said.

Jiang expressed appreciation to the stance of Cambodia on Taiwan issue and welcomed Chea Sim to visit China at his convenient time.

In a separate occasion, Ranarith warmly welcomed Jiang on behalf of the Cambodian National Assembly. He asked Jiang to convey his regards to the Chinese people.

He spoke highly of the ever-frequent exchanges between the Cambodian National Assembly and China's National People's Congress.

Ranarith reaffirmed that the Cambodian National Assembly and people will firmly adhere to the One-China policy and oppose the so-called "independence of Taiwan" or "One China, One Taiwan."

Jiang said that after the formation of the new Cambodian government, two major ruling parties, the Funcipec Party and the Cambodian People's Party, devoted themselves to consolidating national reconciliation and economic reconstruction and made big achievements either at home or in external exchanges.

The Chinese president believed that under the leadership of Cambodian King Norodom Sihanouk, the Cambodian people will definitely make bigger progress in national construction.

Jiang arrived here earlier Monday for a two-day state visit.
