Vice-President Urges Shanghai to Speed up Development

Hu Jintao Inspects Shanghai
Shanghai should speed up its development and endeavor to realize modernization in advance of the rest of the country, Chinese Vice-President Hu Jintao said in the top industrial and commercial center of China.

"Shanghai should fully realize its important position in the country's reform, opening up and economic development and should play a leading and model role in this regard," Hu said during an inspection tour here from November 11 to 16.

He asked Shanghai to step up the restructuring and upgrading of traditional industries with high technology and make strong efforts to develop the high-tech industry, especially the IT sector.

During his stay in Shanghai, Hu toured the Pudong New District, some neighborhood communities and visited the site of the First National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Next year will be the 80th anniversary of the founding of the CPC, Hu said, calling on Party committees at all levels to carry out extensive education for Party members on the glorious history and the great achievements of the Party so that they will play a pioneering role in the country's future development.
