Six Russian Servicemen Killed in Chechnya

Six Russian servicemen were killed and 11 others wounded in rebels' shelling and shooting attacks on federal positions in breakaway Chechnya on Monday.

The Chechen militants launched 22 attacks on Russia's army roadblock positions and office buildings Monday, said the Russian forces' headquarters in the North Caucasus on Tuesday.

In one of these attacks, which lasted for over an hour, rebels opened fire with grenade launchers at a checkpoint in the eastern part of the capital Grozny. A convoy of Russian special police reinforcement unit from the town of Karachayevo-Cherkessia was also ambushed and suffered a big loss, said the headquarters, cited by the Interfax news agency.

Meanwhile, federal troops discovered and defused eight explosive devices planted along roads and another three in villages.

During mop-up operations over the past 24 hours, 36 suspected rebels were captured and 14 weapons, 40 kilograms of explosives and two grenade-launchers were seized.
