China's E-commerce Has Great Potential: Report

China has a great electronic business potential because of its growing Internet industry and international trade, according to an analysis.

China's online computers have grown from 540,000 in 1998 to 6.5 million in 2000, with domains under .cn reaching 546,000 as of September 2000, said Chairman of Chinaproducts.com Mo Daoming in New York Tuesday.

The number of Internet users has doubled every six months since 1998 with 93.3 percent of users below the age of 40 and 84 percent with higher education background, he told a seminar to discuss e-commerce and foreign trade relations.

About 40 percent of Chinese Internet users are in the international trading, finance and telecommunications fields, who are most sensitive to the new economy and technology, he said.

Import-export corporations capture the lion share of Internet connected enterprises and 38 percent of the enterprises have built their web site, with another 45 percent planning to do so, implying that there is a potential market of 4.12 million enterprises for web solutions.

E-commerce gives exporters options to choose most efficient suppliers, so the target market for China's e-commerce must be the international trade sector, Mo believed.

Established in 1998, Chinaproducts.com possesses the world's largest Chinese export-oriented database, covering over 240,000 enterprises in China and more than 1.2 million product listings, according to Mo.
