China to Clear up Yangtze River

Sources from Nanjing say that China will use RMB$200 million starting this winter on "Yangtze River Channel Silt Clearing Emergency Project" to clear away the silt of mud and sand from big floods of last two years.

According to Yangtze River Nanjing Channel Department, the Yangtze River is heavily choked up by mud from last two years' floods. Sediment deposits on the lower reaches making a total of 194 million cubic meters have seriously silted up the Yangtze River. Altogether 13 shoals on the river especially those at Jiangfusha and Zhangjiazhou will be cleared out. The project to clear up the Yangtze River will be the largest undertaken in China's history.
