The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) announced December 4 that the number of ATMs it has in operation has exceeded the 10,000 mark to reach 10,016, the most among all domestic banks.

A spokesman for the ICBC said that the bank has issued some 60 million Peony credit cards and smart cards that can be used at ATMs, forming the start of a nation-wide ATM network.

Statistics show that each day up to 900,000 transactions are made on average at the ICBC's ATMs throughout the country, with a daily transaction volume of 300 million yuan (about US$38 million).

Presently the ICBC's ATMs can handle cash withdrawals, deposits, transfers, inquiries and other banking business.

The ICBC spokesman said that the ICBC plans to set up more ATMs and continue to improve their services to facilitate banking business.
